Once Upon a Pose

A Guide to Yoga Adventure Stories for Children
by Donna Freeman

For this kids yoga book review, Donna sent me two free copies of her new book: Once Upon a Pose: A Guide to Yoga Adventure Stories for Children.  One copy I’ve used for my kids yoga classes and one copy I’ll give away.  Leave a comment on this blog post between now and next Wednesday May 12, 2010 for your chance to win this book.

When I pulled Once Upon a Pose out of the envelope and took a look through it, I was amazed by how much guidance there is, especially for new kids yoga teachers.  There’s one page after another packed with information about kids yoga.   I e-mailed Donna to tell her this isn’t a book – this is more like a kids yoga course.  When Donna calls this a Guide, she isn’t holding anything back!

Here are a few highlights that make this book unique:

  • Classroom Topics from pre-school to grade six that your yoga classes can support,
  • 10 complete yoga adventure stories – with simple fun themes and scripts for teaching,
  • Bilingual: the stories are in English and in French,
  • Lots of Pictures: charming pictures of both boys and girls!

Donna Freeman is no stranger to Young Yoga Masters.  She has inspired us with a series on Character Development since last September.  In the interest of full disclosure – I think she is great!  However, Donna and I are not in business together (although I am an Amazon affiliate).  Investing in Once Upon a Pose (it’s under $20!) will provide a lot of time-saving guidance for those new to teaching yoga to kids.

For Any Parent or Teacher Who’s Ever Wondered: What Yoga Should I Teach Today?
Donna Freeman has poured her experience and passion into this guide.  Once Upon a Pose stands out  for any one who has ever thought:  What yoga should I teach the kids today?  With Once Upon a Pose you can open up to one of ten ready made classes and the fun can begin.

Working recently in a childcare centre have allowed me a deeper insight into the children’s world. As a teacher, one has to have the passion to teach, guide and educate the young ones of the future. With passion, the teacher’s mind opens up to a whole new realm of creativity and inspiration drawn from mentors and the kids themselves.I am sure this book could be of great help to anyone who is inspired to open up the world of learning a wholesome lifetime experience,of any kid.Good luck to the one who is going to get this book!

  25. Joanna Fried says:

This book would be so wonderful for my afterschool yoga class. Your mention that it’s a guide would be hugely resourceful. I’m always looking for ideas and instruction to keep my practice with children (all ages) fun and exciting. But, a book like this could also reflect the foundation of the poses. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m looking it up right now. Take care.

  26. clare says:

This is cool Aruna. I did an “adventure story” for my last kid’s yoga class and it went really well. The story kept the kids engaged for the whole class! They were just on the edge of their mats waiting for the next part of the story! That is a nice range of ages for the classroom topics to cover. Even if I don’t win the book here I think I will be picking it up anyways. Thanks!

  27. Christy says:

This would be WONDERFUL for my PreK classes! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  28. Jennie says:

I would love to have this book for resources to use in future kid yoga classes that I teach. I taught my first kids yoga class to girl scouts last week and I loved every moment of it. I want to share the gift of yoga to all!

  29. Amy says:

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I am a new preschool yoga teacher and am always looking for ideas. Will definitely check this out.

  30. Anita Kaiser says:

I haven’t read any of Donna’s pieces yet – although I am very much looking forward to doing so. From the information on her blog – clearly she has lots to share and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to win a copy. Thanks Aruna!

  31. Maggie Schmidt says:

These are the types of “guides/resources that I have been looking for! I am near Saratoga NY and am developing a series for kids where we do an hour of yoga and then 2 hours of art classes..truly a wonderful experience for all. I know that if they can start harnessing their power of concentration and creativitly at an early age…who is to stop them!!!! Some are serious about it and some are just plain silly! The trick is using the silly to pull them back into themselves and the space. It works. Looking forward to this book!
French is good…Spanish would be more helpful to me!

  32. Love the idea of classroom topics in a yoga book! My program tries to build on preschool themes for the schools I travel to and I’m always scrounging around trying to find new things online.great to have it all in one place.

  33. Shawna says:

What a coincidence! I just read a review on another blog and was looking into buying. Fingers crossed!

  34. What a great giveaway! I, too, love teaching yoga to my children! Dreaming of one day spreading the benifits to others =)

  35. Leslie says:

Wow! This seems like an awesome resource. I’m currently a parent that wants to teach my daughter yoga . . . but one day I hope to become a certified yoga teacher for children. I’d really love this!!
